Green Corps

 

Green Corps is a Commonwealth Government program offering young people aged 17-20 the opportunity to receive quality training while participating in projects that contribute to significant environmental and cultural heritage initiatives.

 

Eight Green Corps teams have been involved with Parklands projects including:

 

1998 - Swainsona Reserve:  track restoration, fencing and tree planting. This track was burnt during the 2003 fires and work has been done towards its reconstruction.

 

2000 - Hume & Hovell Track: Work on the track in Thurgoona on land jointly managed by National Environment Centre (Riverina TAFE) and Parklands.

 

2002 - Baranduda Parklands: Weed removal, extensive fencing, tree planting, nesting boxes added, and survey work done on land jointly managed by Baranduda Landcare group and Parklands.

 

2004 - Huon Hill & IMBY House: Mudbrick construction, goat and horse-proof fencing, weed control, track & amenity upgrades and planting of rare local tree species in partnership with the IMBY Steering Commitee.

 

2005 - McFarlanes Hill: Tree planting, revegetation, and footbridge construction.

 

2005 - Padman-Mates Park: Track benching, erosion control, revegetation, weed control and tree maintenance on land jointly managed by Friends of Padman Park, Albury City Council and Parklands.

 

2007 - Gateway Island: extended Wetland walking track, relocated bird hide, boardwalk construction, fencing, revegetation, nest box construction, installed Bonegilla Migrant Experience Heritage Park interpretive signage and woody weed control.

 

2008 - Murray River Parklands: Indigenous team commencing in July 2008.  Their focus will be on restoration of a Murray Oxbow, cultural heritage surveys, revegetation, fencing on Browns Island, track construction, woody weeds, landscaping and various other projects with the local Aboriginal community.  TAFE NSW, Riverina Institute's National Environment Centre will be providing additional training during the six month program in cultural heritage and environmental land management.

 

Numerous other Green Corps teams have undertaken small projects on various parklands, including: weed control at various regional parks; fencing along the High Country Rail Trail; marshalling activities at the IMBY Festival and official opening of the High Country Rail Trail; installing bollards, barriers and risk management signs on the Hume and Hovell track and the High Country Rail Trail; boardwalk construction on McFarlanes Hill and landscaping at Bonegilla Migrant Experience Heritage Park, to name a few of many activities.
