Parklands Albury Wodonga
About

Organisations

parklands staff are highly skilled facilitators who engage a broad cross-section of the regional community to develop and manage over 4,000 hectares of open space.  The successful implementation of all programs relies on strong partnerships with key groups.

Significant partnerships

TAFE NSW Riverina Institute [Albury Campus/National Environment Centre (NEC)]

This partnership, begun in 1998, has included students undertaking a range of activities providing them with valuable practical and managerial experience in real-life projects. Activities have included natural resource management, bushland regeneration, landcare, environmental studies and information technology. One of these projects was the development and adoption of the Padman Park Management Plan.

The NEC conducts some of the training of Work for the Dole participants who work in our regional parklands. In addition, NEC staff play a key role in development of a number of projects such as IMBY and Eight Mile Creek Parklands.

Wodonga Institute of TAFE

Wodonga TAFE became involved with parklands in 1998 through the construction of the Swainsona Reserve picnic area. Subsequent programs included the establishment of the Wandoo Aboriginal Corporation bush tucker plant nursery. Horticulture courses, instigated by Parklands staff, were offered onsite at the nursery.

The Horticulture Department has conducted training of the CDEP crew for two days per week at McFarlanes Hill while developing the Ridge Walking Track. TAFE staff members have assisted parklands with on ground works on the High Country Rail Trail.

Charles Sturt University

Charles Sturt University has partnered parklands in a number of Natural Heritage Trust projects, and provides valuable in-kind academic, technical and student placement support.

La Trobe University Albury Wodonga

La Trobe University continues to assist parklands in the management of Gateway Island wetlands, and provides technical and academic support in the management of regional parklands.

Towong Shire Council

Towong Shire Council has provided cash and in-kind support in the development, maintenance and marketing of the Tallangatta section of the High Country Rail Trail.

Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE)

DSE has partnered parklands in the protection of threatened species, particularly the Smooth Darling Pea (Swainsona galegifolia) and the Tuan (Phascogale tapoatafa).

Departmental staff provide valuable technical support in management of regional parklands.

North East Catchment Management Authority (NECMA)

NECMA assists with the acquisition of Natural Heritage Trust funding and provide parklands with technical support relating to catchment management issues.

Baranduda Landcare

Baranduda Landcare Group is one of our most successful community partnerships. The group is a sub-group of Kiewa Catchment Landcare Group. Together we are restoring the native vegetation to the roadsides, hills and gullies at Baranduda. Also included is about 400 hectares of regional parklands comprising semi-cleared hillside and remnant bushland at the northern end of the Baranduda Range. This partnership has brought together numerous community groups.

Service clubs and regional community groups

Over 25 clubs and groups such as Rotary, Lions, Apex and CFA have supported parklands with the provision of cash and in-kind support across a broad range of projects.

Regional Skills – Work for the Dole

In April 1999, a joint proposal by parklands and Regional Skills Incorporated netted the region a significant Work for the Dole program as a means of supporting our community's youth and unemployed.

The program is used as a vehicle for supporting the region’s youth and unemployed, with work related issues such as work ethics, self-esteem and opportunities for employment. The program also provides the participants with a sense of belonging in the community and a feeling of ownership for projects they have been involved with.

The program has assisted over 820 people. On completion of the program 40-60% of these participants have obtained substantial part-time or full-time employment, or have returned to further education.

The joint venture has highlighted the effectiveness and benefits of quality community programs jointly managed by community organisations. Work for the Dole has provided in excess of $2 million in labour to Parklands since the program's inception.
