Volunteer of the Month - John Canavan

Our 'Volunteer of the Month' for July 2010 is John Canavan.

John spends a lot of his volunteer time working with Toby Grant who is one of the rangers at Parklands. His time has been spent woody weeding through to blackberry spraying, John has done it all. He has also spent many days working at Block 19 doing building restoration.

"The Fast 7"

1) How long have you been at volunteer at Parklands?
“I started with Parklands in March of 2009 and Wednesday is the usual day that I volunteer. I also volunteer other days if I am able to.”

2) How did you first find out about Parklands?
“One of the rangers at Parklands was doing the Natural Area Restoration and Management course at TAFE in Thurgoona and mentioned volunteering at Parklands.”

3) What have you gained out of your time at Parklands?
John jokingly says “sore hands and back” but more seriously remarks that it compliments his study and gives him hands on experience.

4) What is your favourite memory of your time with Parklands?
“I really enjoyed the volunteer tour that Parklands organised during volunteer week. It was really good to visit all the out of the way parks.”

5) What is your favourite activity?
“I really enjoy the variety of activities that volunteering with Parklands allows me to do. I get the hands on experience and practical knowledge.”

6) What is your least favourite activity?
“I did not really enjoy woody weeding on the hillside at Padman Park in Albury. It was hard work.”

7) Any comments?
“I really get a sense of achievement through volunteering with Parklands Albury Wodonga. I believe volunteering also benefits the community and the environment.”
