Landcare on the job at Baranduda

Baranduda Landcare, with its mission of "restoring native vegetation to hillsides and gullies to create a diverse, weed-free parklands environment". Is continuing its program of protection and enhancement.

Recent activities of Baranduda Landcare, a sub-group of Kiewa Catchment Landcare, include:

Nesting Box Project.

The first 25 (of a planned 60) Turan/Brush-Tailed Phascogale (threatened arboreal mammal) and Sugar Glider nest boxes have been installed along vegetated corridors with large and regenerating native trees.

Eradication of Patersons Curse.

A major program aiming to preclude seed set across the entire lower, accessible section of the Parklands estate was implemented this year. Control techniques included commercial boom spraying, targeted hand spraying and hours of hand pulling of weeds in isolated situations. We have encouraged an integrated approach with various authorities to undertake control on there land.

Logo Completion.

Baranduda Primary School Children participated in a Baranduda Landcare Logo Competition in October. Gould League prizes (courtesy of Parklands) have been presented.

Green Corps Launch.

A six-month program of environmental protection and enhancement by Green Corps was launched in September. An initiative of the Commonwealth Government, Green Corps aims to provide young Australians with opportunity to participate in priority environmental projects. The Baranduda team of 10 young Albury-Wodonga people, supervised by Paul Coope, has a wide ranging program which includes Paterson's Curse and other broad -leaf weed control; revegetation (750 plants already established); woody environmental weed control; fencing; gateway and walking trail development; and flora and fauna surveys.

Planet Ark National (Community) Tree Planting Day.

More than 50 community participants planted some 1150 local native trees and shrubs on this important annual day. A post planting barbeque completed the day.

Some 230 Baranduda Primary School pupils, assisted by teachers, parents and friends, planted about 650 trees and shrubs at the school's planting sites off Howard's Road, Baranduda.
