Haven for Regent Honeyeaters
A disparate group of organisations is combining to provide sanctuary and habitat at Corrys Wood, Thurgoona, for the rare and beautiful regent honeyeater. The Albury-Wodonga Development Corporation will spare box iron bark trees it planted 20 years ago so that regent honeyeaters in the area can continue using them. It will also abandon plans to develop land on which the mature iron barks stand. Hundreds more seedling iron barks are being planted in a community effort initiated by Thurgoona Lions Club. The habitat area is being fenced to ensure its security. Additional groundwork proposed includes interpretive structures, bird hides and signage. Other organisations supporting the regent honeyeater habitat recovery project include Albury City Council; Charles Sturt University; Mother of God Brothers at Guadalupe House, Thurgoona; Transgrid, Woolshed Landcare Group; Thurgoona Public School; and Riverina Institute of TAFE's National Environment Centre, Thurgoona, and parklands Albury-Wodonga. |
