parklands celebrated World Environment Day this year by conducting two events. On Sunday 3 June, a planting day was held with members of the Albury Wodonga Environment Centre (AWEC) and community members. We planted along the banks of the Murray River on Gateway Island, Wodonga.

It was a beautiful winters day, with over 500 plants being planted. The plants consisted of riparian species such as River Red Gums, Silver Wattles, River Tea Tree and Native Tree Violets. The AWEC generously donated indigenous plants that they had colected from seed and grown. The day concluded with a free BBQ by the banks of the river.

On Tuesday 5 June, over 100 Grade 5 Wodonga West students celebrated World Environment Day by also planting on Gateway Island. Parklands was assited by Riverina TAFE, National Environment Centre students, who organised a range of environmental games.

Regional Skills — Work for the Dole participants assisted Ben Berry, our Ranger, with the organisation of the planting activities. The site was scalped with a bobcat prior to the event. This was undertaken to provide a weed free environment for the plants to become established. The students planted over 400 plants on the day. The students enjoyed a BBQ lunch at the Gateway Village.

parklands will be holding further planting days on 29 July at Baranduda, Eight Mile Creek at Thurgoona on August 12, Huon Hill on August 26 and Padman Park, Albury on September 16.
