Padman Park—War on Weeds
parklands has, in partnership with the City of Albury been successful in receiving $29,000 from the Natural Heritage Trust to remove environmental weeds from Padman Park and revegetate with local native plants. The total cost of the project is $190,000 including $45,000 from the City of Albury and $100,000 of ‘in-kind’ support. Padman Park and Mates Park form a significant natural corridor between the Murray River and Nail Can Hill. The project area comprises approximately 20 hectares. The area is currently infested with weeds such as Hawthorn, Wild Tobacco and Privet. Once these are removed, species such as Red Gums, Silver Wattles and Sweet Bursaria will be planted, increasing habitat value. The project, when complete, will form part of the Mungabareena to Wonga Wetlands recreation trail, making the area much more accessible for active and passive recreation. A feature will be improved access to the Murray River. Louise Bull has been appointed as the project coordinator for this exciting project. Louise’s role is to coordinate the work program and to liaise with the community. A number of community days are being planned to undertake the extensive works, including basic skills training days in revegetation and environmental weed control throughout this year. For further information on this project, or to get involved, please contact Louise at the parklands Office on (02) 60 234417. |
