Eight Mile Creek– Bells Reserve Update
The Hume Rural Lands Protection Board recently decided to cease grazing in the Bells Reserve Travelling Stock Route at Thurgoona. Bells Reserve is a rare example of a natural un-fertilized (Super-phosphate) Grassy Box Woodland. With no grazing, the regeneration and harvesting of native grass species such as Danthonia and Microlaena will be extremely successful. The decision will allow the continued development of the Eight Mile Creek Corridor as a substantial habitat corridor between Table Top and the Murray River. Works are still continuing on this $200,000 NHT funded project to rehabilitate the Eight Mile Creek corridor. The project is being implemented by the National Environment Centre in partnership with parklands. To date the project has involved 55km of fencing, the planting of 25,000 plants, an additional 3km of direct seeding, and the erection of nesting boxes. The Hume & Hovel Track meanders through part of the project area, and is a great walk to appreciate the flora & fauna of the region. |
