Kiewa River – A Wildlife Haven
Work is progressing on this extensive NHT funded project. Under the guidance of Rob Johnson-Turner of Regional Skills, over 10km of fencing and 25,000 plants have been planted by Work-for-the-Dole participants. The electric fencing is powered by solar energy, making it environmentally friendly. Off-stream watering points have also been constructed to protect the banks and improve the water quality of the Kiewa River. The Kiewa River Walking Track is a feature of the Kiewa Parklands. The track starts at the Murray Valley Highway bridge at Killara and winds along the banks of the Kiewa to its junction with the Murray River. There are a number of bird hides along the track overlooking wetlands. The Kiewa River parklands is home to many woodland and wetland bird species. A map ($2.50) of the Lower Kiewa River track is now available from the Albury Wodonga Visitor Information Centre or at parklands. |
