‘Block 19’ – Bonegilla Migrant Experience
The past year has been an exciting time for developments at the former Bonegilla Migrant Reception and Training Centre’s ‘Block 19’. The building of the new interpretation ‘The Beginning Place’ and cafe has been completed and work is now underway for fitting out both structures. A design company named Thylacine has been appointed to create a large installation within ‘The Beginning Place’ and to create the relevant interpretation materials. Communication with ethnic communities is on-going via newspapers, publications, and correspondence. A working bee was held at the site on 28 January 2005, attended by local community members and parklands staff. On other fronts, a consistent, national public relations plan has caught the attention of the Minister for Multicultural Affairs Mr Pandazopoulos and the Chairman of the Vic Multicultural Commission Mr Lakakis, resulting ina a recent briefing visit. Discussions focused on the need for on-going funding and we are presently waiting to hear back from them. Plans are underway for the Grand Opening Event to be held December 2005. The artistic team from Melbourne is planning some wonderful activities including involvement of ethnic school groups from Melbourne. Other main activities in progress include setting up the Bonegilla Trust Fund, sponsorship/donation avenues, landscaping master plan, printing of Bonegilla brochures, planning self guided tours, and chasing grants.
