Hume and Hovel Walk Track
Even Hume and Hovel would be happy to witness the upgrade about to occur on their track. parklands through the assistance of Work for the Dole and the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources (DIPNR) are soon to make the section of track between Kywanna Roadd and Elizabeth Mitchell Drive user friendly once again. Maintenance plans have been completed with assistance from our regular volunteers, and the works noted will include additional signage, two new bridges, hand rails on all existing bridges, repairs of gates and stiles, slashing and spraying of the track surface and the strategic removal of weed species throughout the reserve. Most “prickly” weeds (briar rose and blackberry) will be retained until the successful revegetation of “prickly” natives (Sweet Bursaria and Kangaroo Thorn) is carried out. This ensures that the small bird species present in the reserve have shelter from prey such as cats, fox, and larger bird species. Unfortunately Hume and Hovel would be disgraced with the actions currently occurring from local Bardi Grub harvesters in the area. These people are scraping off large sections of top soil and leaving the site vulnerable to ersosion. This practice is destroying the native grasses at the site, it leaves the area looking untidy and unstable to walk on, and it encourages weed species such as Paterson’s Curse to grow, eliminating any chance of regeneration at the site. parklands has a BAN on all Bardi Grub harvesting other than in a few specific sites that are being used for study purposes, where the soil is replaced and monitored. If you witness any Bardi Grub harvesters in the Thurgoona area please report them to parklands as soon as possible.
