Corrections Victoria to the Rescue
Corrections Victoria go out of their way to support parklands and parklands' seven Friends Groups in developing and maintaining our regional parklands for environmental, recreational and heritage outcomes. During the past year, when parklands operating budget was cut substantially, Corrections Victoria provided invaluable support through funding a part-time Community Service Order Supervisor for seven months. The CV-funded Supervisor works with up to 12 volunteers undertaking community service order hours. CV also fund a bus to transport the team to numerous regional parklands sites. These teams have, quite literally, ploughed through tonnes of work during the past year, from cutting and poisoning woody weeds on river frontages through to steep and demanding hillsides. They have planted over 6,000 seedlings on steep, near inaccessible hill country, cleared firebreaks, benched out 4km's of new walking tracks at Huon Hill and upgraded the popular McFarlanes Hill Ridge Walking track to name but a few of the many activities they have been involved with. From crowbarring their way through rock to concrete 20 fence strainer posts in a day, to picking up rubbish at popular swimming spots such as Waterworks, the Kiewa River and Gateway Island, to installing park infrastructure, this team of able volunteers have much to be proud of. It appears that these youths are also proud of their acheivements, returning on weekends to show their family and friends some of the great spots and projects where they have worked. We value this ten year long partnership and the significant contribution the program has made to the regional community during this time. |
