Friends of the Red Gum Track Project Update
Summer Ranger Program a noticeable success The summer rains generated an abundance of native grasses and blackberries. Grant funding enabled us to employ a few University students as Summer Rangers to assist us to complete maintenance works across all our regional parklands. We invite sponsors to support future Summer Ranger programs as a means of providing hands-on training to University students whilst also enabling quality NRM outcomes through spraying at optimal periods of the year. Protection of Murray River Native Fauna The Fred Archer Charitable Trust donated $12,000 towards upgrading fences along the lower Kiewa River and Murray River to resolve ongoing problems with rouge cattle. Work is underway on this project which also provides great training opportunities for youths. Contact us if you have a group eager for a few days of hands-on fence training. Stock-proof Pedestrian Gates Thirty stock-proof pedestrian gates will be installed along the lower Kiewa River, Wodonga Creek and Murray River over the next six months thanks to a DSE Stewardship in Action grant. Contact us if you have a group eager for a bit of park infrastructure building experience. Riparian fencing and revegetation Bright Greencorp team constructed their first, and we believe near “perfect” fence near the Murray—Kiewa River Junction in March. Fencing work continues along Wodonga Creek with the Department of Water and Energy in preparation for more revegetation in winter (a mix of direct seeding and tube stock) Community leadership training being investigated We are keen to establish a community working group to oversee the planning stage of developing the Murray River Parklands from Lake Hume through to West Wodonga. Contact us if you are keen to be involved as a participant, facilitator or sponsor. |
