Fireproofing our regional parklands

Spring is a busy time around the regional parklands as our Rangers and volunteers undertake fire prevention works.  Firebreaks are slashed around the urban fringe and along roadsides and track verges.  Earth firebreaks are established through spraying access tracks to enable safe passage of fire vehicles  if ever required.  Stock crash graze strategic locations to remove the bulk of the annual grasses.

Research demonstrates that removing stock from hill country from late spring enables perennial native grasses to regenerate.  These greener groundcovers have been found to be far more fire retardent than exotic pasture grasses.

parklands Rangers and volunteers undertake weekly inspections of our popular regional parklands throughout the summer months.  Unfortunately this includes extinguishing the occasional camp fire that has been left smoldering and removing rubbish that has been dumped.

We thank the Hume Building Society and the Department of Sustainability and Environment for their contribution towards a 900 litre fire unit.  This is kept full over the summer months to enable a speedy response to any smaller fires that are located on our regional parklands.
