A number of significant works have been developed and constructed at Huon Hill Parklands. These include: road upgrading and sealing; by-pass lanes; car parking; composting toilets; barbecue and shelter facilities; and lookout platforms. Thank you to the Rotary Clubs of Wodonga, West Wodonga and Belvoir for their significant financial and in kind contribution towards constructing the Rotunda and Shelters. There has been a significant community contribution towards this development. Some of the significant partnerships include Wodonga TAFE teachers and Indigenous Community Development Employment Program participants constructing the lookout platforms, compost toilet and many steep, rocky fence lines. Other projects involved: 7km's of walking tracks establsihed, fencing, signage and interpretation, and revegetation on the slopes and gullies. 2004 National Tree Day saw a group of dedicated local volunteers plant over 800 trees in a gully descending from Huon Hill towards the Murray River. Since then, there have been a lot of groups involved with track construction and revegetation. Along with hundreds of individual volunteers, groups include Workways staff, Australian Taxation Office staff, Wodonga TAFE staff, Hume Building Society staff, Murray High School students, Wodonga Catholic College students, Lavington Scouts, Border Bushwalking Club, Murray Valley Centre, Wodonga's Youth Leadership participants, CVGT Green Corp teams, Personnel Group Green Corp teams, National Environment Centre (Riverina Institute of TAFE). FundingInitial funding of $50,000 for the project was obtained through Business Victoria, via the Victorian Government's Community Support Fund. Wodonga City Council, and the Rotary Clubs of Wodonga West, Wodonga and Belvoir/Wodonga, combined to contribute an additional $25,000 in cash and a similar amount of in-kind support. Natural Heritage Trust grants have funded wildlife corridor planting and Workways sponsored the construction and installation of 100 nest boxes in the Hidden Valley corridor for Squirrel Gliders, which are a threatened species.
After 14 years of significant landscape scale conservation works to transform this cow paddock into a regional park, Parklands role at Huon Hill has changed. City of Wodonga took over the maintenance of this bush park in July 2010. Parklands continues to implement environmental and recreation projects in partnership with the City of Wodonga. Parklands is also responsible for the crown land around the Huon Hill Lookout area. Interpretive Planning students from Charles Sturt University are currently reviewing the ten year old signage, as a number of other walking tracks have since been established. Contact us if you are interested in sponsoring the printing of these signs?
