Indigenous Seed Production Area

Indigenous Seed Production Area

Project Objective

To create a regional indigenous seed production area able to provide sufficient quantities of seed for revegetation projects undertaken in and around the Albury Wodonga region. The site will also be used as a demonstration and education area for environmental groups, schools, tertiary organisations, interested individuals and commercial interests

Species to be propagated

As can be seen below, emphasis has been placed entirely on understorey species. These species have proven to be the most difficult to collect from as they are generally spaced some distance apart. Understorey species are also being used far more frequently due to the increased understanding of ecosystem dynamics.

Grasses

Initially the project objective involved the collection and sowing of native grass seeds into the seed orchard. We are now opting to fence out areas around the Eight Mile Creek area and harvest from these on a yearly basis. There are excellent stands throughout this area that can be readily harvested.

Some of these include:

 Bothriochloa macra

 Red-leg Grass

 Chloris truncata

 Windmill Grass

 Danthonia species

 Wallaby Grass

 Microlaena stipiodes

 Weeping Grass

 Themeda triandra

 Kangaroo Grass

 Aristida species

 Wire Grasses

 Austrostipa species

 Spear Grasses

 Phragmites australis

 Common Reed

 Carex species

 Carex

 Poa species

 Tussock Grass

Understorey (Shrubs and Ground covers)

Seed will be collected from the following species, propagated and sown into the seed production area. Some species will also be purchased as tube stock due to the difficulties associated with successful propagation and growth rates.

The following species will be used:

 Hairy Bursaria

 Bursaria spinosa

 Sweet Bursaria

 Daviesia latifolia

 Hop Bitter Pea

 Platylobium formosum
