Padman Park
Volunteers on Clean Up Australia Day

Restoring the Vegetation and Removing Exotic Weeds

Located in Albury, along the banks of the Murray River and below Monument Hill Parklands, Padman Park covers 15ha of rabbit and weed infested land with a 1,500-metre frontage along the river. This is the first project to be conducted in Albury since Albury City Council joined parklands in 1999.

The project involves extensive weed removal and control, revegetation and habitat restoration.

Funding

The Natural Heritage Trust Fund has allocated $29,000 for on-ground and project works for 2001/2002. The total cost of the project is $190,000 including $45,000 from the Albury City Council and $100,000 of 'in-kind' support.

The Project

Through the completion of this valuable project, parklands and its partners, principally City of Albury, will be creating a significant flora and fauna link between Hovell Tree Park, Monument Hill Parklands, Wonga Wetlands, Murray River Corridor and Gateway Island.

Some exotic trees will be retained to preserve the cultural and historic values of the site. The removal of pest harbours such as hawthorn thickets will further assist the regeneration and revegetation of the site by eliminating rabbits.

Clean Up Australia Day is always well attended (unfortunately)
Improved walking tracks and interpretative signage will form an important component of the Padman Park project.

This project has developed strong partnerships between parklands, Albury City Council, Australian Trust for Conservation Volunteers, Riverina Institute of TAFE and Monument Hill Parklands Association.

Inquiries from volunteers wishing to join with the partnering organisations will be welcomed through parkland on (02) 60236714 or Email carlson@parklands-alburywodonga.org.au
