Eight- Mile Creek and Tributaries

Natural Heritage Trust Project at Thurgoona

Revegetation of the Eight Mile Creek Corridor

Development of the Eight Mile Creek corridor, located on the northern outskirts of Albury is continuing to keep this place of great natural beauty at the forefront of regional parks managed by parklands.

This parkland follows 14 km of waterways, mostly along the Eight Mile Creek, but also sections of the Nine Mile Creek and Woolshed Creek. The National Environment Centre, Riverina Institute of TAFE (RIT) are the project managers of this Natural Heritage Trust funded project.

The Project To Date

Since the autumn of 1998 the project has seen:

  • Eight- Mile Creek and Tributaries
    Reginal Skills-auspiced Work for the Dole
    The planting of over 25,000 under-storey plants
  • Direct drilling of under-storey species seed for over 12 km
  • Extensive new bridgeworks, track work (3 kms), stiles and fencing (55kms)
  • The erection of nesting boxes
  • The construction of 2 dams and 5 stock crossings
  • A management plan prepared by Natural Resource Management students from the National Environment Centre.

Groups involved

Work on projects at Eight Mile Creek is being undertaken by Work for the Dole participants, Conservation Volunteers Australia, Green Corps, Albury Lands Protection Board, Charles Sturt University, Greening Australia and parklands.

Students from Murray High School have designed and constructed a range of nesting boxes for animals and birds and these are currently being placed throughout the site. Would you like information on the Hume and Hovell Track?
