Revegetation of the Lower Kiewa River

The Lower Kiewa River Project aims to establish, revegetate and stabilise a riparian corridor on either side of the Kiewa River from its junction with the Murray River upstream to Yackandandah Creek.

The riparian corridor will be between 50-100 metres wide. The corridor will be fenced, with selected off-river stock watering points.

By excluding stock, vegetation should regenerate from seed from remnant plants and from the seed bank in the soil.

Funding

Funding for the project, totalling $150,000, was obtained through the Natural Heritage Trust (1999/2000 - $100,000 & 2000/2001 - $50,000).

Project Difficulties

The project has overcome difficulties relating to licence arrangements, the width of the proposed corridor, on-going maintenance issues, public access and the loss of grazing land to licencees.

The Rotary Club of Wodonga has recently completed work on the Kiewa River Walking Track, which extends 4 kilometres from the Murray Valley Highway to the Murray-Kiewa Junction. Bird hides have been constructed along the track overlooking wetlands and 10kms of fencing, and 25,000 plants have been planted by Work for the Dole participants.
