The annual BankWAW community planting morning is on again on Sunday 3 August!
Thank you to BankWAW who donates the cost of plants, guards, and stakes for each new bank account opened in the previous year as part of their ‘Banking on Trees’ program.
This year efforts will contribute towards establishing much needed canopy cover between Ryans Lagoon North and Ryans Lagoon. It will support Traditional Owner aspirations for this site and create a wildlife refuge for native fauna to help them adapt to the changing climate.
Ryans Lagoon is a wetland of national significance and is a good example of riverine billabong in the upper parts of the Murray River. Wetlands provide critical environmental services such as cleaning water, storing carbon, and providing unique habitat, and we need you to help restore this vital ecosystem!
Ranger Dan has been busy preparing these planting sites. Unlike the usual preparation, this site has required the use of a railway iron ‘smudge bar’ to knock over many thousands of dead thistles! These accumulated in the aftermath of the 2022/23 floods when the site was too wet to drive on to undertake weed control.
