Another aspect of our two-year ‘Applying Technology to Tackle Invasive Pest Plants’ project will be underway next month and into August when we invite the community to join us in learning how to identify invasive grasses and get some hands-on experience in removing them. We have some amazing native grasslands around the local area and we want you to help us protect them!
These community days to help with identification of invasive grasses and the best ways to eradicate them will target sections of the High Country Rail Trail in partnership with the Wodonga Rail Trail Advisory Group and the Bonegilla Rail Trail Advisory Group. These sessions will especially focus on whiskey grass (Andropogon virginicus) and African lovegrass (Eragrostis curvula). Whiskey grass is native to the United States of America but is an environmental weed in NSW and QLD. It is common along tracks and roadsides and is beginning to spread into VIC. African lovegrass is native to southern Africa and is a declared noxious weed in most states.
We will also hold a session in Baranduda Regional Park to target fountain grass (Pennisetum setaceum) and other garden escapees.
