Browns Island Stewardship Resumes 3 February

Browns Island Stewardship Resumes 3 February

The woody weeding continues on Browns Island with our River Stewardship sessions resuming on 3 Feb and running weekly throughout February and March.

These weeding mornings carry on the work Parklands and volunteers are doing as part of our ‘Restoring Roosting Refuges’ project. Our goal is to revegetate and protect river frontage to increase the riparian habitat and to provide additional feeding and roosting sites for the vulnerable grey-headed flying-fox (Pteropus poliocephalus).

Unfortunately, large patches of woody weeds established during the wetter years recently and have formed dense monocultures that out-compete native plants. Things like tree of heaven, box elder, fig, and ash are all in need of removal.

Community participation is a key priority for Parklands as connection with the environment is vital to its protection and maintenance into the future. Not only does volunteering for projects like this make a real difference to our local bush, it’s also great for your own mental health and wellbeing!

So if you’d like to get out in nature and be a part of this project, you can join in our River Stewardship volunteer mornings. The sessions run for two hours and you don’t need any experience or specific equipment as a Parklands Ranger will be on hand to guide you. We just ask that you register so we know you’re coming and have your details in case something changes.

You can find all the details of upcoming events at the links below and you can keep an eye on our Events page for future events as they are added.

For our returning volunteers – please note that the start time for the month of February is 8 am.

This project is funded by the Australian Government’s Natural Heritage Trust under the Urban Rivers and Catchments Program.
