Thanks to the WIRES National Grants Program, Parklands Albury Wodonga will be adding to the squirrel glider (Petaurus norfolcensis) nest box network. Funding from this grant will allow us to install 150 additional nest boxes in gaps in the habitat corridor.
Squirrel gliders are listed as vulnerable in Victoria as their habitat is in decline, particularly old-growth forests with trees containing hollows. These hollows are essential to the survival of squirrel gliders as it is where they nest and shelter. Since it takes around a century for a tree to become large enough to form suitable hollows, providing next boxes is a crucial part of glider conservation.
Wodonga Men’s Shed will fabricate the brackets for these boxes and to make monitoring more efficient, the boxes will be fitted with printed labels.
Parklands Rangers, volunteers, and Friends Groups will undertake the installation of the boxes during the coming winter.
