Albury Community Stewardship Mornings Improving our Natural Spaces

The last few months have seen community volunteers, Albury council staff, and Parklands Rangers tackle some invasive weed infestations around the parks and reserves in Albury. This is all thanks to our Community Stewardship program which is financially supported by Albury City Council. The program runs weekly two-hour sessions in different locations that need a bit of TLC.

In September and October alone, around 4500 weed stems have been removed from places like Eight Mile Creek, Horseshoe Lagoon, Heathwood Park, and Vickers Road Reserve. Things like privet, cherry plum, box elder, and olive are real problems and can spread if left unchecked. These weeding mornings involve cutting out the stems, then a ‘drill and fill’ method is used to kill the plant so the soil is not disturbed. Our wonderful volunteers have also been picking up rubbish, especially from creek environments.

Smaller garden escapees can also wreak havoc on the natural environment and on Monument Hill especially, invasive lavender is one of the high priority targets of the stewardship mornings. Around 300 lavender plants were removed in a single session in September!

These sessions are not only about doing good for the environment – they encourage people to get out in nature (which we all know does wonders for mental health!), meet like-minded people, and achieve the sense of pride that comes with caring for your local patch.

We are nearing the end of the stewardship mornings for this year but still have some sessions left to go in December – please come along if you would like to be involved! You can find all the info below:

Dec 4 – Browns Lagoon

Dec 11 – Pioneer Park

Dec 18 – Corrys Wood

The program will resume on Feb 5 2026.

Finally, a massive THANK YOU to everyone who has been a part of this program this year!
