Bears Hill parklands had a much needed cleanup last week when the Green Army team removed old plastic tree guards and collected stakes for recycling. Six volunteers collected a remarkable 24 bags of plastic, weighing approx. 200kg.

While working the steep slopes of the hill, team members enjoyed the local bird life and Eastern grey kangaroo population, and the view from the top was ‘magnificent’. Some members are recent University graduates, some are doing a Gap year; all are there to build their skills and resumes in the hope of working in the field in future. Tasks such as this provide valuable opportunities to develop skills in identifying local plant, animal and bird species and discriminating between weeds and pests and desirable species.

The team will return to the site after the autumn break to plant new habitat species.
