The next stage of the Murray River River nature trail has had a very positive start.  Rangers have spent the bulk of January on Bulrush (Browns) Island, where Wodonga Creek branches off the Murray, undertaking weed control.  Sadly, virtually every invasive weed listed for this region can be found at Bulrush Island, including Blackberry, Tree of Heaven, Wild Tobacco, Fig, Purple Top, Briar Rose, Privet, Box Elder Maple and Ink weed. In the three weeks spent on the island, over 12,000 litres of weed control chemical was used with a great success rate.

Our goal is to retore this island as a wildlife haven and estabish public access via a footbridge from Gateway Island.  It really is a magnificent part of the Murray River with some great landscapes, creeks, wildlife and awesome recreational fishing.

It was such a pleasure working in such an amazing location!  Bulrush Island is very beautiful, peaceful and only 10minutes from the Albury and Wodonga CBD’s.  We look forward to future work on the island and keeping you up to date with the progress.
